Webinar Speakers
Jamie Morris (Bird Friendly City of Kawartha Lakes @Website) The Bird Friendly Kawartha Lakes (BFKL) group submitted an application on behalf of the municipality in February 2024. The group consists of representatives from the Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee, Kawartha Conservation, Kawartha Land Trust, Fleming College, Kawartha Field Naturalists, Carden Field Naturalists, Kawartha Wildlife Centre, and Kawartha Bird Control.
Jamie will speaking about how a diverse Bird Team is key to creating a certified Bird Friendly City.
Jennifer Clary-Lemon and Meredith Blunt (Bird Friendly Kitchener @Website) The Kitchener Bird Team is comprised of community members from across Kitchener. They work with a dedicated staff from the City of Kitchener and gained a successful certification as a Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly City in November of 2024!
Jennifer and Meredith will be showcasing how and why they are hosting a month-long celebration for this years' World Migratory Bird Day.
Carly Davenport (Bird Friendly Uxbridge @Website) Bird Friendly Uxbridge is a dedicated team of community member volunteers focused on educating citizens and municipal officials about the importance of mitigating key threats to birds, protecting and restoring bird habitat and educating residents about birds.
Carly will be discussing how to make connections with municipal officials to enact positive change for birds and biodiversity at large.
Penny Nelson (Bird Friendly Lions Bay @Website) As the very first small town in Canada certified by Nature Canada as Bird Friendly, the Village of Lions Bay is a pinacol example of what it truly means to be bird friendly.
The team went to work and applied for certification in March 2022. On May 10th, 2022, Nature Canada announced that Lions Bay was the first community to earn the Bird Friendly City designation in the new Small Town category! This is a wonderful achievement for the village and another of which to be proud. The designation lends support to our conservation activities and is very much in line with our Official Community Plan Bylaw, which lists as its first core theme “Respecting nature and the environment” and specifically refers to the protection of nesting areas.
Tony Morris (Nova Scotia Bird Society @Website) As a founding member of Bird Friendly Halifax in 2020, Nova Scotia Bird Society works across the province to promote the study and conservation of wild birds.
The Nova Scotia Bird Society has been a focus for birders in this province for over 65 years. Serving about 600 members as a not-for-profit, fully volunteer run organization. NSBS will showcase their work and its alignment with Bird Friendly Halifax.
Don Reynolds (Bird Friendly Devon @Website) Led by the Devon Nature Club and in partnership with The Town of Devon and many other local organizations and clubs, Devon is the first small town to be Bird Friendly Certified in Alberta! Learn more about their projects to protect local birds and engage with council and residents on why it is important to do so.
Nick Carter (Bird Friendly Edmonton @Website) Nature Canada announced in May 2022 that Edmonton has become the 8th city in Canada to receive Bird Friendly City Certification.
Edmonton has strong policies and practices in Habitat Protection, Restoration, and Climate Resiliency (entry level), and, both from the City itself and many organizations, high points in Community Outreach (intermediate level). We have challenges in Threat Reduction but are still overall at entry level.
This national recognition is a result of months of work to document what has been done in the Edmonton Area. The following are the members of the Bird Friendly Team who have contributed to our application in many ways: Edmonton Nature Club Nature Alberta Edmonton and Area Land Trust Beaverhill Bird Observatory North Saskatchewan River Valley Conservation Society Edmonton River Valley Conservation Coalition (ervcc.com) with help from: Wild North Wild Bird General Store Wildbirds Unlimited and with cooperation from the City of Edmonton.
Doris Clayton (Bird Friendly Hamilton Burlington @Website) Bird Friendly Hamilton Burlington was founded in December 2020 and consists of volunteers and organizations, such as BurlingtonGreen and Green Venture. Hamilton and Burlington are the 6th and 7th cities to be certified as a Bird Friendly City by Nature Canada. The Co-Chairs are Dave Tourchin and Sara Shwadchuck.
Angela Tremka & Jordan Rustad (Bird Friendly Regina @Website) The City of Regina has worked in collaboration with Nature Canada’s partners including Nature Saskatchewan and Nature Regina, along with many other community organizations to make their communities a safe haven for wild birds. The city has implemented bird friendly policies and actions to help birds thrive in Regina. These actions include: Establishing a “no-roam” by-law for cats to reduce the impact of cat predation on wild bird populations Protecting natural areas such as Wascana Centre, a 2,300-acre urban park which supports 276 species of birds Engaging the community of Regina through educational initiatives such as celebrating World Migratory Bird Day and The Get Outside Club!
