Artist talk – Isaac Zepeda Ayala and the KW Youth Climate Council

Join us for a talk and discussion by KW YCC’s Isaac Zepeda Ayala on the themes of  human interference and consumer impact on bird built homes. Look for a special installation created by Isaac and Eastwood Collegiate Institute’s Impact Club reflecting on those.

From the KW Youth Climate Council manifesto:
“You’re walking outside and you notice a plastic bottle on the ground. A few steps later a candy wrapper, a bag, a fork, a container, a few more steps and there’s a cluster of plastic, wire, and rubber whose origin you can’t quite identify, but no doubt, it is human made. Do you pick any of it up? Do you have time to pick it up? Do you consider how it got there? Would you care what others thought if you picked it up? Did you even notice it? Or do you continue on your way, and, like many others, quietly internalize the harsh reality that our planet is in severe danger as the consequence of a collective apathy towards excessive production and over consumption.” 

The KW Youth Climate Council is a growing group project of young climate activists, artists, and change-makers here in Kitchener-Waterloo. We aim to make a difference in our community by transforming litter from community clean-ups and litter reduction efforts into artwork and public installations! 

Last fall we successfully launched the pilot of our project/program; held three local clean-ups at Victoria Park, McLennan Park, and Lakeside Park; recruited over 25 volunteers, collected more than 130 pounds, 35 full bags, 183 Plastic Bottles, & 177 Aluminum Cans. (among much much more)

From this, we designed and created 6 life-sized sculptures made from chicken wire and the salvaged material from our clean-ups, and displayed them in the former product displays on the side of the Market Square building in Downtown Kitchener (Frederick St).

This talk is part of our drop in programming. Registration is not required but helps us keep track of attendance.
